A team of Western physics and astronomy graduate students triumphed in the NASA Space Apps Challenge, winning the prestigious Best Use of Science Award.
Competing against 15,444 teams from 163 countries, Dakota Cecil, Ian Chow, Simon Van Schuylenbergh and Maximilian Vovk developed SkyShield, a 3D app that tracks near-Earth objects, asteroids and meteoroids to prevent collisions with human life or space equipment—all in under 30 hours.
The Space Apps Challenge is intended to engage a global community in developing solutions for the challenges humanity faces on Earth and in space.
